The “Last Wire” In Our Wireless World
WIRELESS IS BEAUTIFULWe love the freedom to stay and go wherever we like. Linked but not tied. Connected without wires.
CONNECTORS AND CABLES ARE UGLYLet’s get rid of the last wire. Why do we still need to plug the power cable in our phones and gadgets? Everything else is wireless.
CONNECTORS AND CABLES ARE UNNECESSARYElectric power can be transported without wires or connectors. Power transfer over short distances is surprisingly simple. Power transfer over long distances is still a bit of a challenge.
WIRELESS BATTERY CHARGING IS POPULARShort distance power transmission is used in many products. Toothbrushes, LED candles, remote controls, medical equipment, power tools, digital cameras and phones.
Cool, Convenient, Compatible
CAN I CHARGE MY WIRELESS TOOTHBRUSH WITH THE CHARGER FOR THE PHONE?Today that is unlikely. Each product comes with its own wireless charger. We got rid of the last wire, but created a jungle of incompatible charging stations. This can’t be right!
WE NEED COMPATIBLE CHARGERSWe all love wireless products but hesitate to stuff our desks and homes with incompatible charging stations. We demand that our charging station will work with products from many companies, and will work with next year’s products as well.
The Wireless Power Consortium
A STANDARD FOR WIRELESS POWERThe Wireless Power Consortium will set an international standard for compatible wireless charging stations. Compatible products will be recognized by a logo. Phones, cameras, remote controls, and all mobile electronics carrying the logo will work with all charging stations that carry the logo. Simple and obvious.
INTERNATIONAL COOPERATIONThe Wireless Power Consortium is a cooperation of Asian, European and American companies. We believe that mobile products need global compatibility.
The wireless power consortium is a cooperation of companies in different industries. We believe that the logo will be used by all types of portable electronic products – mobile phones, music and video players, computer accessories, cameras, remote controls, toys, gaming, medical and personal care devices.
AN OPEN CONSORTIUMMembership of the wireless power consortium is open for every company. The standard and logo will be available for all companies on non-discriminatory conditions. We believe in wide adoption, in all products, in all markets.
THE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONSThe wireless power standard will have the same charging time as the current technology of wired chargers. It will meet the major regulatory international safety radiation and emissions standards. The Consortium will first establish an international standard for devices 5 watts and below, with an international standard for high power devices and equipment to follow.
Technology
PROXIMITY POWER IS EFFICIENT AND SAFEShort distance power transmission is usually based on the principle of magnetic induction. With this technology, power is transferred only if the receiver is close to the transmitter. The technique of magnetic induction was discovered more than a 100 years ago. It has been used for decades in all kinds of electronic equipment. Why? Because it is simple, efficient, and safe.
LONG DISTANCE POWER TRANSMISSION IS NOT EFFICIENTThe technology for long distance power transfer is still in its infancy. If power is transmitted over a distance of more than a couple of centimeters, only a small part of the transmitted power will find its way into your phone, and the rest is wasted in the environment. That’s why the existing products are based on proximity power only.
Want To Become A Member? The Consortium has two membership categories: Regular Member and Associate Member. The regular members participate in the technical development of the standard. The Associate Members participate in the review of draft standards.
Our Consortium Charter defines how the consortium works. It also defines the procedure for joining as a new member. If your company wants to join as a member, simply fill in this form to receive a copy of the Consortium Charter.
